When Salma was 13, her parents locked her in the cellar and wouldn’t allow her to study or go out. This house arrest lasted for nine years, until she gave in to pressure to agree to an arranged marriage. She then found herself in a different form of isolation – under the watchful eye of her husband and his family. This Muslim girl from southern India found only one escape from her “imprisonment”: writing poems. In them, she outlines her desires and wishes but above all, openly and in the most intimate detail, she describes the cruel life of girls fettered by extremely strict Islamic edicts and customs in her village. Salma continued to write in secret even after her husband threatened her with death. She succeeded in getting a notebook of her poetry to an enthusiastic publisher and became one of the best known Tamil female poets. Her newfound fame helped her win partial freedom, and she began fighting for the rights of the village. In her films, U.K. director Kim Longinotto frequently focuses on the stories of courageous women faced with discrimination and injustice, as in Pink Saris, that was shown at One World two years ago.
