In recent years the Chinese repression of Tibetans has led to a radical form of protest: self-immolation. Since 2009 about 120 Tibetans, mostly Buddhist monks and nuns, have burned themselves to death. They use this desperate act to call for the return of the Dalai Lama and the establishment of freedom. This torturous form of protest illustrates the hopeless situation of the Tibetans, whose voices are not sufficiently heard. In response, the Chinese government tries to cover up these acts and punishes the surviving victims and their families. Unique, illegally acquired footage of public protest suicides as well as expert opinions give shocking insight into the current situation in Tibet.
